General FAQ's & Frequently Asked Questions Direct from AirPacksŪ

How does it work?
The patented ergonomic AIRPACKS system of air-filled bladders in the shoulder straps and lumbar support transfers the weight to the lower back and hips to relieve strain on the neck and upper back.

How do I make sure the bag is fitting me correctly?
The lumbar cushion should rest in the small of your back, adjust the straps so it will rest there.

For more information on proper fitting, please scroll down to download PDF files.

I am worried, my daughter is carrying too much in her backpack. How much should she by carrying?
Most physicians recommend that student's not carry more than 10% - 15% of their body weight in their backpacks. Kids today are carrying too much, up to 40 lbs.

Here is a translation for different weights:

  • 50 pounds: 2.5 to 5 pounds
  • 80 pounds: 4 to 8 pounds
  • 100 pounds: 5 to 10 pounds
  • 130 pounds: 6.5 to 13 pounds
  • 150 pounds: 7.5 to 15 pounds

How do I stop my backpacks from pinching under the arms?
Loosen the underarm straps.I feel like I am going to fall backwards.

Why does this happen?
With other packs, you tend to lend forward to compensate for the weight, so with the AIRPACKS backpack it just might take a little getting used to. If there is an extreme sensation of falling backwards reduce the amount of air in the lumbar cushion.

How do I blow up the cushions?
They will come inflated, but if you want to personalize it with more or less air, it is very easy. Pinch the valve to release air, use the attached pump to increase air.

What is your warranty?
If there is a problem or you are not completely satisfied, we will make it right.

How durable are the bladders:
They are made of 20 gauge PVS, which is what boat bumpers are made of.  We have tested them for durability, even had a truck drive over them.

What do I do if a bladder leaks?
We will replace it immediately.

Healthcare Professionals

Mary J Hickey
Professor of Physical Therapy

"In a research study, middle school students exhibited a more balanced posture using AirPacks, than using traditional packs. Balanced posture leads to decreased muscle stress and strain. The students also preferred the AirPacks to the traditional pack they were carrying."

"Optimal health begins at a very early age. It has been shown how much damage a backpack can do to a developing spine. As a father and a Chiropractic Physician, my children will use AirPacks only."

Dr. Brooke Schwartz-Sonnenwirth
Doctor of Internal Medicine
Chairperson of Safety and Security Committees, Jewish Day Schools

"This is the best backpack I have seen."

Dr. Sheryl Russell, DC

"AirPacks care and concern for the public's spinalhealth is matched only by their breakthrough ergonomic technology and commitment to design excellence!"

Martin Cohen, DC DACBOH
Chiropractic Occupational Health Information Network (COHIN)

"We the undersigned, tested the AirPacks backpack against non air packs backpacks on July 27, 2000 using the "Pocket Ergometer" as the test instrument. The "Pocket Ergometer" is a training devise which detects muscle functioning. It is used to train individuals about how to reduce Repetitive Stress Injuries (RSI) by reducing muscle stress and strain.

We placed 18 lb.s of books in the non-AirPack backpacks then placed these packs on test subjects. The Ergometer electrodes were placed across the trapezius muscles. Several readings were taken with the instrument. The same books were then placed in an AirPacks backpack and again multiple readings were taken. The results of this testing with 20 patients showed that significant reduction in trapezius muscle function (less stress and strain) was recorded when the AirPack backpacks were utilized."

Carlo DeLuca, Ph.D
Biomedical Engineer
Director of NeuroMuscular Research Center
Boston University

"Initial biomedical testing indicates that the AirPacks backpack, with its innovative design and use of air, shifts the weight to the lumbar and hip area. This reduces strain on the neck, shoulders and back."

Lynda Palmstrom, OT
Founder of Occupational Therapy Associates
Wakefield, MA

"I've been recommending AirPacks to my patients. The AirPacks system centers the weight, balances impact and provides superior ergonomic support."

Santo Sampino, DC, CCSP, DABCN
CFO/Regional Oversight Manager
National Consulting and Health Management Organization

"The design of these backpacks reduces compressional loading of the acromio-clavicular joints to reduce the risk of impingement problems and redistributes spinal loading to be primarily born in the hips, resulting in significantly diminished back strain."

Dr. Lawrence J. Rosenberg, DC, DABCOH
President, National Incident Prevention Consultant
Teaneck, New Jersey

"What you are doing is truly amazing."

 Key Features of Airpacks Backpacks

  • Ergonomically correct using one or two straps. No matter how you wear the pack, it distributes the load properly.
  • Adjusts to your shoulder width so you'll always carry the pack on one shoulder or two.
  • Puts the load in the right place and prevents injury. That's because the weight is transferred to the lower back, which is exactly where it should be. The pack hugs the body just right, without the use of a belt.
  • The inflatable lumbar support provides personalized, easy-to-adjust comfort.
  • Inflatable shoulder straps let you adjust the padding thickness until it feels just right.
  • Let's air flow across the back. The pack is more comfortable because air flows between you and the pack.
  • The bag stands up. The flat bottom keeps the pack from falling over.
  • IllumiNITE fabric provides safety at night.
